Calling main contractors & development partners

Date added: 06/04/2018

Birmingham City Council is holding a market engagement event on 17 April for
interested parties to discuss the development of an Athletes Village for the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Perry Barr.

Birmingham was awarded the honour of hosting the 2022 Commonwealth Games in December 2017. This privilege brings with it a number of obligations as the host city, one of which is the provision of sufficient residential accommodation to house around 6,500 athletes during the Games period.

The preferred option is the development of a new purpose built residential development on the site of the former Birmingham City University campus in Perry Barr. The development of the athletes village will crucially also create a transformational legacy for Perry Barr including the development of a high quality residential neighbourhood, providing more than 1,200 new homes with an improved environment for residents.

Significant progress has been made to bring this project forward at pace, as clearly the primary driver is to ensure that the athletes’ accommodation is constructed by the time the Games commence in June 2022. For the period Post Games, the accommodation will be converted to general needs housing, some of which will be retained by the Council, and some will be sold on for other tenures including; affordable housing, private rent and owner occupation.

Site assembly is well advanced, and following the appointment of Arcadis as the Council’s Employer’s Agents, two Birmingham architect firms, Glancy Nicholls Associates and Glenn Howells Associates, are developing the design of the residential quarter. It is anticipated that a Planning Application will be submitted by the end of June 2018.

On 27 March 2018, the Council’s Cabinet approved the strategy for the procurement for the development of the Village and it is intended that the opportunity will be advertised on 27 April 2018 and will follow an OJEU process given the size and scale of the proposed development.

Prior to the issue of the formal advertisement, a market engagement event for interested development partners/contractors is being held on 17 April 2018 at 12:30pm at the Council House, Victoria Square, Birmingham, to inform the market of the opportunity, the proposed procurement process and timetable.

**It should be noted that the event is intended for the main development partners/ contractors only and that there will be further events for supply chain opportunities after the main contract has been awarded.**

To register your attendance, please register here by 12 April 2018. Attendance is limited to 2 delegates per supplier and further details of the event will be provided upon your registration.
